"The Liberals will audit Labor’s botched Natural Gas Extension Program, which deceived thousands of country Victorians," Mr Baillieu said. "We will extend the natural gas roll-out in an open and honest manner."

The Liberals’ policy Extending Natural Gas In Country Victoria details the extension of the gas connection program.

The Shadow Minister for State Development Philip Davis said: "In the lead-up to the 2002 election, the Minister for State Development John Brumby travelled the state promising natural gas connections across country Victoria. But many communities later discovered that only a portion of each town would be connected free of charge. Many residents were faced with a bill of thousands of dollars to be connected to the reticulation system.

"In 2005, the Labor Government announced it would not deliver its promised gas connections to the communities of Avoca, Wandong, Terang, Bright, Beechworth, Myrtleford, Alexandra and Bonnie Doon. Other communities, including Heywood, Smythesdale, Nathalia and Yea simply never heard another word about their promised gas connections after the 2002 election was over. It became obvious to communities throughout country Victoria that the Labor Government’s Natural Gas Extension Program was a con, and was designed to win votes in the lead-up to the 2002 election."

Mr Davis said a Liberal Government was committed to an audit of the Natural Gas Extension Program to work out if, where and how the $70 million has been spent.

"A Liberal Government will re-visit Labor’s broken promises to connect gas to Avoca, Myrtleford, Bright, Beechworth, Bonnie Doon, Alexandra, Wandong, Smythesdale and Yea," Mr Davis said. "A Liberal Government will connect gas to Nathalia, Terang, Warburton and Heywood if the pulp mill proceeds. We will also implement all the existing contracts including connecting Barwon Heads and Camperdown to natural gas.

"Where communities were promised full gas connections but will only receive partial connections, a Liberal Government will audit and re-visit these projects, including Woodend, Macedon, Gisborne, New Gisborne, Lancefield, Romsey, Riddells Creek, Creswick, Yarra Glen, Launching Place, Woori Yallock, Seville, Seville East, Wandin, Maiden Gully, Yarra Junction, Wesburn and Millgrove."

Mr Davis said a Liberal Government would provide support from the Regional Infrastructure Development Fund to extend gas reticulation networks to communities able to access reticulation but not scheduled to do so under Labor.

"A Liberal Government will also fund feasibility studies into the provision of liquid natural gas or liquid petroleum gas for country towns unable to access either the existing or the proposed reticulation plans," he said. "A Liberal Government is committed to doing everything possible to correct Labor’s betrayal of Victorians and connect Victoria’s country towns to reticulated gas."
