Ingram Calls For Intervention In RMIT Nursing Study Changes

The Independent Member for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram, has called on the State Government to intervene following a decision by RMIT University to cease nursing studies at the Sale campus of East Gippsland Institute of TAFE.

"RMIT University has informed its Division 1 nursing students and staff of the imminent closure of the facility and has given them details of their limited options for the continuation of their course in 2010 and beyond," Mr Ingram said.

"I have received representation from a number of current students who are midway through their nursing degree, as well as some prospective students who are intending to commence their nursing studies next year.

"RMIT nursing students are rightfully very angry and concerned about this disruption to their studies and the impact the closure of this facility will have on their future living and travelling arrangements.

"This is a vitally important course providing highly skilled nursing professionals for our health system and any reduction in access to this study course will certainly have an impact on future health care in the Gippsland region.

"I have written to the State Government requesting intervention with RMIT University to explore all avenues to ensure that this important training facility is retained locally," Mr Ingram concluded.
