Dse'S Burning Program Well Under Way In Gippsland

DSE's Regional Fire Manager, David Tainsh reports that the autumn prescribed burning program in Gippsland is progressing well.

By Department of Sustainability and Environment - 18th March 2004 - Back to News

A number of fuel reduction burns have been undertaken over the past week in the Gelantipy, Noojee, Erica, Briagolong, Bairnsdale and Mallacoota areas. Most of these have also involved local CFA brigades assisting DSE fire crews.

"The past week has been particularly successful, with favourable weather conditions enabling staff to commence a large number of burns, which have included regeneration, fuel reduction and ecological burns across the region," Mr Tainsh said.

"The burning plan is obviously dependent on the weather, fuel moisture and drought indices all being exactly right for that particular day, so we're pleased that recent conditions and data have given us the opportunity to get these burns underway successfully."

Continuing drying weather conditions may impact on available burning days, but Department staff are confident that they are in a position to commence more burns planned for the coming week.
