2014 Gippsland Fires Appeal Launched

The Gippsland Emergency Relief Fund has launched an appeal to support people affected by the fires that are continuing to affect communities across parts of Gippsland.

By Latrobe City - 18th February 2014 - Back to News

Fortunately, there has been no loss of life but many people have been affected with loss of property, farms, homes, livestock, shedding and fencing. People have been affected in Baw Baw, Latrobe and Wellington communities, while East Gippslanders are still in the midst of a bushfire that has not yet been controlled.

President, John Mitchell, urged individuals and organisations to donate generously to the Gippsland Emergency Relief Fund.

¡§GERF focuses on helping to meet people¡¦s immediate needs for food, clothing, utensils, furniture, bedding and fencing, rather than capital items which may be covered by insurance or government aid. We have already provided funds to people affected by the Westbury fire and, today, have made payments to severely affected people in East Gippsland and Wellington Shires. We are anticipated many more requests for assistance over the next few days and weeks. ¡¨ Mr Mitchell said in launching the 2014 Gippsland Fires Appeal.

The Fund provides relief and assistance to people living in the Gippsland municipalities of Bass Coast, South Gippsland, Latrobe, Baw Baw, Wellington and East Gippsland who suffer injury, loss or damage from natural disasters.

¡§We are driven to provide rapid support to our fellow Gippslanders in their times of need,¡¨ Mr Mitchell said, ¡§I call on all Gippslanders and the wider community to help, either by making a direct cash donation or running a fundraising event.¡¨

The Fund is a registered charitable organisation (registered number A0020241A) making all donations tax deductible. All donations are returned to the community and no costs are deducted for administration.
