Danny O'Brien blindsided by plans to sell Tarraville school by the Labor state government
The community is outraged over plans to sell the historic Tarraville school site. Danny O'Brien urges consultation, questioning DEECA's claim it's surplus and advocating for community use instead.
A recent advertisement in local newspapers advising of the Labor state government's intention to sell the historic Tarraville school site has been met with outcry from the local community. The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O'Brien said he had been working with the Tarraville Residents and Ratepayers Association (TRRA) since late 2023 to support it in forming a new committee of management for the site and was blindsided by the news of the sale.

Protecting community spaces
Mr O'Brien said, "My office has received several emails and phone calls pleading for assistance in having this decision overturned. It is clear that the community feels let down by this decision and that further consultation is needed."
The Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA), which is currently responsible for the management of the site, has claimed the old school is surplus to community needs. "This is a strange claim from DEECA when there is no other suitable community facility available in the town."
"There also seems to have been no consideration given to the historical significance of the site despite it having a protective heritage overlay. I have no doubt that the community would make great use of the hall if it were brought up to standard and made available for community use," he said.
Saving Tarraville Hall
Mr O'Brien said he understood that the old hall would need extensive works to bring it up to a usable standard, but was alarmed that it appeared the decision had been made to sell without proper consultation of the community or any real consideration to funding the necessary works.
"I strongly encourage anyone within the community of Tarraville and surrounding areas who would like to see the hall remain available for community use to contact DEECA directly and share their thoughts."
