Sale Welcomes People, Passion and Pictures.

As part of its 150th birthday celebrations, The Age is presenting a series of public events titled, ‘People, Passion and Pictures through the Eyes of The Age’.

By Wellington Shire Council - 11th August 2004 - Back to News

These events will be run in both Melbourne and regional Victoria and will feature a selection of photographs from the past 150 years, in conjunction with photographers from The Age discussing the experience, pressures and dilemmas of their role.

The press photographer is often the first eyewitness to events that help shape our history. Who could forget the dramatic images of the Victorian bushfires that ravaged the state? A picture can convey a simple and powerful image in the most clear and concise way, as they say, ‘a picture speaks a thousand words’.

Discussion points by each photographer will include; What makes a good press photograph? What is the experience of the press photographer? How do they deal with the often immense pressures and stresses of their profession? What are the real stories behind some of the most famous pictures featured in The Age? There will also be an opportunity to ask questions of each of the presenters.

These events will appeal to anyone with an interest in history and the media, and will help develop a deeper appreciation of the power of the photographic image.

The Sale event will be held at the John Leslie Theatre, Esso BHP Billiton Wellington Entertainment Centre, on Friday August 27th from 12pm to 2pm. It will feature John French, Wayne Taylor and Viki Lascaris as presenters.

Tickets for each of the forums will cost only $10, student groups of 20 or more will pay only $5 a ticket. See The Age newspaper for further booking information and event details, or call 03 9596 8881 or visit the web site at www.150.theage.com.au

A little about our Sale presenters:

John French

John French joined The Age working on Newsday in 1969. In 1978 he became deputy pictorial editor, 1989 Pictorial Manager and in 1995 Pictorial Co-coordinator.

Some of John’s career highlights include:

1976 Summer party to Macquarie Island in the Sub Antarctic
1977Toured with United Nations emergency forces to Egypt
1978Football photographer
1982 Brisbane Commonwealth Games
1990 Auckland Commonwealth Games
1994 Victoria, Canada Commonwealth Games
2000 Olympics in Sydney as the Sports Picture Editor.

Currently, besides management duties and his pictorial organising commitments, John shoots, edits and transmits two nights a week of AFL football. He photographs, edits and shoots the Australian Open Tennis, covers both the car and bike grand prix and some of the more high profile golf tournaments.

Wayne Taylor

Wayne first discovered photography during high school, spending many lunch hours in a makeshift darkroom underneath the school hall stage, trying to create the perfect black & white print.

After completing VCE, Wayne decided to follow his passion for photography and study at Brighton Bay Photography College, still never thinking he could earn a living from it.

During his schooling, Wayne found work experience with TV week & New Idea, mainly assisting in studio shoots of Australian television celebrities.

In 1994, after two years at Brighton, he received a cadetship at a suburban newspaper, The Dandenong & Berwick Journal, covering advertising, real estate, product shoots, local sports and editorial stories such as cake stalls, 50th and cheque presentations.

In 1996 with a couple of years experience as a working press photographer, Wayne somehow managed to organise one day a fortnight work experience with The Age, going out on assignment with photographers to see how the "Big Boys" work.

On his first day, he went out to photograph the then Victorian Premier, Jeff Kennett, who was visiting an industrial area in Melbourne. John Howard, who was then leader of the opposition walked by Kennett unexpectedly and they shook hands. It happened very quickly and Wayne was able to get a clean shot of the scene. With the National election only weeks away, The Age ran the picture on the front page! Wayne continued his work experience and after a few months was put on the permanent casual roster and in 1997 was hired as a full time Photographer with The Age specialising in General News & Sports.

During his time at The Age, Wayne has covered events such as:

  • The Australian Open, Tennis & Golf
  • The Grand Prix
  • 2003 Rugby World Cup
  • AFL Grand Finals
  • Boxing Day Tests
  • The Sydney 2000 Olympics

After the tragedy of the Bali bombing, Wayne spent a month in Bali reporting on the aftermath and in 2003 returned for two months to cover the beginning of the trials.

Viki Lascaris

High school work experience in year nine was all the convincing Viki needed that a career in photography was for her. After spending two weeks at a commercial photographic studio in South Yarra and a third week at an advertising photographer’s studio in the city, she was hooked.

Viki then spent her school holidays gaining photographic experience and after completing high school in 1987, applied and was accepted, to a photographic assistant/technicians course at the Northern Metropolitan College of TAFE. The course was an intensive two-years during which time students were trained in studio photography, food photography, car photography, portraiture, micro and macro photography, as well as basic chemistry and physics.

Between 1989 and 1992, Viki worked for a private studio in the darkroom, assisting on photo shoots, working in the image library and eventually moved on to shooting. Her first assignment was for the MCC and then as social photographer for Women’s Weekly magazine.

In March 1992, Viki started working at The Age in the darkroom and after a two-year stint headed out on the road for the newspaper’s ‘Home’ section. Since then she has worked in the pictorial department, including news photographer, business photographer, Sections Picture Editor, News Picture Editor and Sunday Age Picture Editor.
