Yarram Court House scores $15,000 for cultural upgrade

Wellington Shire Council is delighted to announce a $15,000 Victorian Government grant for a new art space and gallery at the Yarram Court House.

This welcome injection comes through the Government’s Small Towns Development Fund and will cover half of the estimated $30,000 project. The remaining amount will be contributed by the council with work set to commence this financial year.

The historical court room, which is also home to the Yarram Tourist Information Centre, will be converted into an inviting tourist attraction with the purchase of gallery fittings and fixtures, and lighting and security upgrades to enhance the space. A shop carrying local art and craft will also be created as part of the redevelopment.

The project is a council initiative and has received strong backing from the Alberton Project, the Yarram Traders Association and local community groups. It will allow artists to exhibit their work and provide a cultural centre for Yarram and the surrounding areas to enjoy.

Said Wellington’s Mayor Peter Gault: "This welcome new addition to the existing facility will be a great resource which the whole community stands to benefit from. The council recognises the importance of fostering the creative arts and culture across our shire, and of stimulating economic growth and development through tourism.

"We would like to thank the Victorian Government for their valuable contribution to this project, which will assist us with improving and preserving this historical attraction."
