Gippsland holds a position of power

Gippsland is well poised to take advantage of opportunities in the emerging economy, according Ross Garnaut, speaking at the Agribusiness Gippsland Annual Conference.

Prof. Garnaut said that in spite of the closure of the lignite based generators at Hazelwood, there is great potential for wind, geothermal and biomass-based energy sources, which Gippsland has in abundance.

"Gippsland may take a hit due to the winding back of old systems, but the future is rich if opportunities in renewable energy resources are grasped," said Prof. Garnaut.

"One of the advantages Gippsland has is that it is so close to Melbourne. It shares the same advantages of the rest of Australia in being close to Asia, but it also has access to great renewable resources, which some other regions do not."
