The money is distributed through Council’s Community Assistance Grant Scheme to help not-for-profit community groups provide a broad range of programs for residents.

Cr Malcolm Hole, Mayor of Wellington Shire Council presented the successful groups with their cheques and thanked all the groups for their input.

"Council recognises how important these programs and activities are to our community. They all add to the enjoyment of living in the Wellington shire for all our residents," said Cr Hole.

This year 26 groups received funding to support initiatives in their communities.

"We are delighted to recognise the hard work of all the groups involved. These groups work tirelessly to add to the quality-of-life that we all enjoy.

"We thank them for the time and effort they put into making these programs so successful" said Cr Hole.

Councillor Hole also expressed his thanks to the community representatives and council officers who worked so diligently to prioritise the applications and make the appropriate recommendations.

Community Assistance Grant Scheme is an annual program. Applications must address selection criteria and meet demonstrated needs of the community.

Applications for the 2007/08 Community Assistance Grant Scheme will open in July 2007
