Recycling Made Easier

Bass Coast Shire Council

Bass Coast Shire Council

Recycling in Bass Coast has been made easier for everyone with the changes to the recycling service.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 14th July 2009 - Back to News

Bass Coast Shire Council Infrastructure Director, Steven Piasente, said from 1 July, residents are able recycle a greater range of plastics.

"Previously only plastics graded 1, 2 or 3 could be included in the recycling," explained Mr Piasente.

"You are now able to recycled plastics from 1 to 7.

"Obviously this increases the amount of articles you can put in the recycling bin, but we do need people to think about what they recycle.

"It’s important not to put things into the bins that will contaminate the recycling."

A list of what can be included in the recycling is available on the waste calendars sent to every household last month. Details are also available on Council’s website.

"Contamination is one of the biggest problems associated with recycling," Mr Piasente said.

"This includes recyclables tied in plastic bags. With recyclables from hundreds of homes feeding the conveyor belts at the recycling plant, there is no time for staff to open the bags so they end up going to landfill.

"Contamination in the recycling can also have drastic impacts on the machinery," said Mr Piasente.

"Plastic bags empty or filled with items and old clothes can get tangled up in machinery causing stoppages and damage.

"Some people think that just because they can recycle steel cans, that they can then recycle a steel engine block or chair and this is not correct. Large items like these can be dangerous for staff and damage machinery," explained Mr Piasente.

"Recycling bins are for household recycling only, so if you are unsure about what you can recycle you should contact Council."

New bins

Council is now providing recycling bins to residents free of charge.

"The State Government has set targets for reducing the amount of community waste going into landfill by 65 per cent by 2014," said Mr Piasente.

"By providing bins, we hope the rate of recycling across the shire will increase. Wonthaggi Recyclers have started delivering these bins to properties that currently don’t have a recycling bin.

"The long term plan is to replace the old bins that are out there as well, so that within seven years, all our properties will have the standard recycling bin."

Over the busy summer period (29 December 2009 – 26 January 2010), there will be a weekly, rather than fortnightly recycling collection, to deal with the increased number of people in the Shire.
