, Latrobe City is not in a position to purchase the site.

The discussion follows government overtures for council to purchase the site.

Latrobe City mayor, Cr Kellie O’Callaghan, said the site, known as the Lurgi Site, was originally developed in the early 1950s and commenced commercial production in November 1956 as the Lurgi Coal Gasification Plant operated by the then, Gas and Fuel Corporation of Victoria. The plant was decommissioned in 1969 when natural gas from Bass Strait was introduced into the Victorian gas market.

Cleaning up the site to accommodate new industry was one of a number of projects identified by the Latrobe Valley Ministerial Taskforce in 2000 to address significant economic and social issues confronting the Valley as a result of privatisation of the local power industry. Over $14 million has been spent by the Victorian Government to decontaminate the land.

"The Lurgi Site presents a significant opportunity to expand our industrial base with most of the work completed to establish a heavy industry park on the site. However, despite significant work by council and the Victorian Government, there remain some final hurdles to overcome, before this opportunity can be realised. As such we will continue discussions with government and other stakeholders," Cr O’Callaghan added.
