Welcome News For Arts Community In Shire Plan And Budget

There’s welcome news for the local Arts community in the just adopted East Gippsland Shire Council Plan and Budget.

By East Gippsland Shire Council - 3rd July 2006 - Back to News

CEO Steve Kozlowski said the Council Plan and Budget contain several important initiatives for the Arts and Cultural organisations within East Gippsland.

"For a start we will see the completion of the revamp to the auditorium at the Bairnsdale Aquatic and Recreation Centre," he said.

"This near half million-dollar project will include upgrade of the lighting, heating and air-conditioning together with new seating and improved access for all."

The Shire and the State Government’s Community Facilities Fund will jointly fund the project.

Mr Kozlowski said an additional $60,000 recurrent funding has been provided to support an expanded Arts and Culture Program following the release of the Shire’s new Arts and Culture Strategic Plan.

"Part of the funding will be to provide a Regional Arts Officer with significant funding to be provided by Arts Victoria," he said.

Mayor, Cr Jane Rowe said the Council Plan also recognised the need for a Regional Performing Arts facility for East Gippsland.

"East Gippsland lacks a high quality regional performing arts venue and the Shire is keen to capitalise on a recently announced State Government regional arts funding program opportunity," she said.

"There are no guarantees and we will also pursue other funding avenues to secure a premium arts facility for the area."

Cr Rowe said the Council Plan also seeks to establish a firm relationship with East Gippsland’s indigenous community.

"This will build upon the outcomes of the Shire’s Community Well Being Plan that was adopted last year," she said.

"We have recently adopted a specific indigenous portfolio of Councillors whose task it will be to assist in the development of an "Indigenous Affairs Policy."
