Keep Recycling, Bass Coast!

Unaffected by the SKM Recycling’s facilities' closure.

By Portal Admin - 3rd March 2019 - Back to News

Bass Coast Shire Council is not affected by the recent closures of SKM Recycling’s facilities and is urging residents to continue recycling as normal.

All kerbside recycling collected from Bass Coast is being processed as normal and is not going to landfill. Bass Coast’s kerbside recycling is processed by Visy, which is not affected by the shutdown of the SKM Recycling facilities.

Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Brett Tessari said the most important message for the community is that Bass Coast’s recycling does not go to landfill.

"Everyone should continue the great work they are already doing and continue to sort their recyclables as normal," Cr Tessari said.

"Since the introduction of our three-bin system in September 2017 we’ve diverted over 21,000 tonnes of kerbside waste from landfill, that’s an incredible 76 per cent."

Kerbside recycle bins accept rigid plastic, glass, aluminium, metal, paper and cardboard items. All of these items should be placed loose in the bin – not bundled or contained in plastic bags. Contamination, such as polystyrene, soft plastic or fabric, is one of the biggest problems associated with recycling.

A number of recyclable products can be taken to Bass Coast’s Waste Transfer Stations and Recycling Centres free of charge. These are located in Wonthaggi, Inverloch, Grantville and Cowes. These products include scrap metal, including white goods and appliances, car bodies, glass, plastic, paper and cardboard, fluorescent lights, used motor oil, batteries and empty paint tins.
