Council and Building Commission move on Criterion

Following Wellington Shire Council action on behalf of the local community, the Building Commission is conducting an investigation into the current building work status at Sale’s historic Criterion Hotel.

This investigation is being undertaken with urgency to ensure repairs are carried out to lift the building from its unsafe state.

It represents a welcome endorsement of the council’s long running efforts to get the owners to carry out the work, following as it does the Building Appeals Board’s earlier rejection of an appeal by the owners against council enforcement measures.

Said Wellington’s Chief Executive Officer Lyndon Webb: "Wellington Shire Council wants to reaffirm its commitment to the community over this issue. We are doing everything in our power to ensure a suitable outcome is achieved as soon as possible and very much welcome the action being taken by the Building Commission, which endorses our position.

"Our key concern with issues like the lack of repairs to the Criterion Hotel is the potential risks to the health and safety of those living in and visiting this shire.

"Our building team work hard to ensure that all building owners across the shire have a clear understanding of their legal rights and responsibilities when undertaking building maintenance and work, and for this to be ignored is unacceptable."

Building Commissioner, Tony Arnel, said "The Commission takes seriously failures to comply with determinations as were issued to the owners of the Criterion Hotel, especially when non-compliance may impact the safety of the community significantly."

The Building Commission is a statutory authority that oversees the building control system across Victoria - covering building legislation and practices as they relate to the industry and consumers, and also acting as an advisor to the government.
