Major Improvements To Shire Businesses Planned

East Gippsland Shire’s extensive business portfolio, including marine facilities, caravan parks aerodromes and recreational facilities will receive a major boost in expenditure over the next three years.

By East Gippsland Shire Council - 3rd July 2006 - Back to News

CEO, Steve Kozlowski said the Council Plan and Budget contained several specific initiatives that would provide a major stimulus to Shire’s business operations, the bulk of which will be either self funded or supported by external grants.

"The Council Plan indicates a wish that Council businesses operate on a commercial basis and that eventually a dividend is returned," he said.

"We recognise that these businesses play an important part in the economic life of the East Gippsland community and will seek to ensure that changes are introduced appropriately.

Mr Kozlowski said the recent proposals regarding Marina and jetty fees had been deferred for review later in 2006 to enable full consultation with stakeholders and all issues to be considered by the Council.

"We need to ensure there is an appropriate balance between user charges and ratepayer subsidies of these activities," he said.

East Gippsland Shire will deliver the following outcomes over the next three years:

Marine Facilities:

Slip Bight Marina Club rooms $170,000

Bemm River Boat Ramp Car park $200,000

King Street, Paynesville Boat Ramp Car park $100,000

Slip Bight Marina No.5 $1,000,000

Metung Marina upgrade $1,000,050

Marine Safety projects over 3 years $625,000

Recreational facilities:

Mayor Cr Jane Rowe said the Shire needed to ensure that the very significant public investment in areas such as Marine infrastructure, Caravan Parks and the like were adequately supported.

"The proposals contained in the Council plan and Budget identify the areas of immediate priority and also set a path where further improvements can occur in the future," she said.

"Ensuring that these activities are commercially sound means we can generate sufficient funds to grow them into the future and then be in a position to provide quality infrastructure for residents and visitors alike to maximise the benefits for the East Gippsland economy and, in turn, our community."
