Gippsland Water Secures Oh&S Award

Gippsland Water’s innovative approach to Occupational Health and Safety has been rewarded recently, securing third place in Blake Dawson and Waldron’s national Inside OH&S Competition for its sewer pump station falls prevention device.

This falls prevention device was also recently named a finalist in the Victorian Government’s 17th Annual WorkSafe Victoria Awards in the Best Risk Solution Category - for innovation or invention in workplace health and safety that eliminates or significantly reduces risk.

Gippsland Water worked in partnership with its electrical and maintenance contractor - Transfield Services to develop a secure barricade system that greatly reduces the risk of a fall when entry to a pump station is required.

A pump station is a series of pumps located in an underground pit which pumps wastewater through the sewerage pipe system. This new system has a built-in barricade that unfolds and creates a security fence around the top of the open entry hole to the pump station.

Gippsland Water’s Chief Executive Officer, John Mitchell said, "Gippsland Water is proud of its ongoing commitment to employee safety. This has been reflected in our two recent achievements in the area of occupational health and safety. We were up against a strong field for the Inside OH&S Competition including BHP Billiton and the Department of Infrastructure who took out first and second places. This falls prevention system is a credit to our employees and Transfield Services who jointly worked on the project."
