using five different household composting systems.

According to Council’s Acting Infrastructure Director, Felicity Sist, 75 Inverloch households will participate in the trial, with 15 households trialling each system.

"The aim of the trial is to test ways to reduce the amount of food waste going to landfill," said Ms Sist.

"During the trial, we will gather information from householders about how easy their system is to use and conduct waste audits.

"In Gippsland, food and garden organic material can account for as much as half of the rubbish by weight.

"This is valuable material that could be returned to the earth to enrich the soil, improve its water holding properties and grow healthier plants.

"Just as important however, is removing organic material from the rubbish stream to prolong the life of our landfill sites and reduce greenhouse gases such as methane," Ms Sist continued.

The systems include two styles of worm farms, a dual compost tumbler and two different compost bins.

Householders received their bins and a short training session about the bins and worm farm systems they are trailing. Participants will receive ongoing assistance during the trial.

The bins and worm farms have been provided free-of-charge courtesy of a grant from Sustainability Victoria and participants can keep them at the end of the trial.
