Gippsland artist to give talk at Gallery

Prominent contemporary artist Nadine Christensen will give a talk about her exhibition ‘A specially built ruin’, currently on show at Latrobe Regional Gallery, on Tuesday 1 March.

By Latrobe City Council - 25th February 2005 - Back to News

Gallery Director, Louise Tegart, said that Christensen, a native Gippslander, had rapidly become one of the most engaging painters in Australia.

"With a sustained interest in geographic and atmospheric phenomena, her practice seeks to examine the changing possibilities and conditions of perception and light, which can both imitate and invert the natural world. The artificial and natural tendencies of light and the way that it can be generated and manipulated is an ongoing interest for Christensen," Ms Tegart explained.

"Her exhibition of paintings titled ‘A specially built ruin’ continues the artist’s investigation of illusionary places and objects in contemplation of stillness. The exhibition looks to the constructed world of stage sets and western style scenery where landscapes, architecture and nature are depicted, however not from direct observation but mediated through popular culture.

"The installation is comprised of paintings informed by a cinematic vision, and objects that relate to the paintings and give a context to her work. Christensen’s work combines aspects of art, design and illustration coupled with elements from art history, photography and new media to create unpopulated worlds within worlds where scale and viewpoints are not based on reality," Ms Tegart explained.

"The paintings in ‘A specially built ruin’ act as windows to a narrative of which the viewer is not fully informed and which hint at another reality beyond our own," Ms Tegart concluded.

Nadine Christensen completed her Bachelor of Visual Arts from Gippsland Centre for Art and Design, Monash University in 1993 and completed further studies at Victorian College of the Arts and Victoria University. She has been exhibiting since 1993, including exhibitions at Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Gertrude Street Contemporary Art Spaces and Canberra Contemporary Art Space. In 2002 Nadine undertook an Australia Council residency in Santa Monica, California.

Nadine will be giving an artist talk on her exhibition on Tuesday 1 March at 3pm. The cost is $5, $3 students and free for Gallery Society members.

The Latrobe Regional Gallery is located at 138 Commercial Road, Morwell, and is open Monday to Friday 10am-5pm, and on weekends 11am–4pm. The gallery is closed on Public Holidays. For further information about exhibitions at the gallery, please telephone 5128 5700.
