Hall Urges Bushfire Submissions

Eastern Region MP Peter Hall has urged all interested people to make a submission to a State Government bushfire inquiry.

By The Nationals - 16th April 2007 - Back to News

Mr Hall, who initiated the inquiry through a notice of motion in the Parliament recently, said it was important that the inquiry received information from a wide range of people across the region.

"Clearly the fires have had a huge impact across Gippsland and the north east and it is now really important that people impacted put forward their views and experiences so that future land management practices address what has occurred this summer," Mr Hall said.

"This is a chance to have a real say in how public land in Victoria is managed for bushfire risk."

The inquiry into the Impact of Public Land Management Practices on bushfires in Victoria is being conducted by the Environment and Natural Resources Committee.

Mr Hall said he expected the committee would visit fire affected areas and meet with residents after the initial written submission period.

Closing date for submissions is 25 May 2007.

The inquiry will look at the extent, timing, resourcing and effectiveness of prescribed burning on both crown and freehold land; how prescribed burning is conducted, including how applicable codes of practice are employed; and the impact on biodiversity, wildlife and other natural assets including water quality and quantity.

Other issues to be considered are the effectiveness of maintaining permanent, strategically placed fire breaks and containment lines throughout public land areas and the provision and maintenance of large water points on crown land to assist with bushfire aerial taskforce operations.

It will also look at the impact of traditional land uses such as timber harvesting, grazing, four-wheel-driving, hunting, camping, mining and prospecting on the scale and intensity of bushfires and the ability of relevant agencies to respond.

As well, whether additional measures are required to provide a mechanism for the skills and knowledge of local communities, and appropriate scientific expertise, to be better represented in the management of bushfire risk on public land will be considered.

"It is a fairly wide ranging inquiry and some of the key points of land management and community involvement in land management are in the terms of reference," Mr Hall said.

"A strong voice on these issues is required, so I urge individuals, communities and organisations to have their say."

Written submissions are invited and all are treated as public documents unless confidentiality is requested and granted.

Submissions should be sent to the Executive Officer, Environment and Natural Resources Committee, Parliament House, Spring Street, East Melbourne VIC 3002 or by email to or enrc@parliament.vic.gov.au

Further information is available from the Committee Secretariat on (03) 9651 3533 or on the internet at www.parliament.vic.gov.au/enrc/
