Or picture Russell Crowe setting sail across Lake Narracan for his next role. Imagination for now, but a possibility in future, with the launch of the new Film Gippsland website aimed at attracting film makers to the region.

Popular Australian actress, Sigrid Thornton, star of the hit television show ‘SeaChange’ and the ‘Man from Snowy River’ film, last week launched the Film Gippsland website at the Nyerimilang Homestead in Metung.

Film Gippsland is a collaborative project involving all Gippsland councils, and has received funding through Film Victoria’s ‘Location Victoria’ initiative, providing mutual benefits to film makers and local communities. The ‘Location Victoria’ program not only benefits local communities with increased economic activity, tourism and employment opportunities, but also film makers by providing them with easier access to regional and remote locations they otherwise may not have been aware of.

Latrobe City mayor, councillor Tony Zimora said the Film Gippsland project has involved considerable research in unearthing appropriate information for the website.

"Research suggested that film makers will search for interesting and unique environments when selecting locations, and not necessarily tourist attractions. Identifying and communicating both environmental similarities and points of difference specific to our region has led to some more abstract locations being included.

"Agriculture, waterways, architecture, residential housing and industrial sites are some of the topics that have been highlighted, that may be attractive to film makers searching for the right location," Cr Zimora added.

Cr Zimora said that over 1000 images will be uploaded to the website and the website has the potential to dramatically increase awareness of the region and in turn stimulate economic benefits.

The website, built to Film Victoria guidelines by Metung’s Maurice Burns who has had considerable experience with film and television locations as well as website development, showcases a large library of images from all over Gippsland, and this collection will be continuously updated and expanded into the future.
