Enrolment Opportunity For Indigenous People In Gippsland

With 2007 commemorating the 40th anniversary of the 1967 Referendum, the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) is having an enrolment day to assist Gippsland’s Indigenous community to enrol and be eligible to vote.

At the 1967 Referendum, 90.77% of the Australian population voted ‘yes’ to amending the Constitution to allow the Commonwealth Government to make laws on behalf of Indigenous people and include them in the Census.

To ensure Indigenous people living in Gippsland are eligible to vote at Local, State and Federal elections, VEC staff will be in attendance at the Central Gippsland Aboriginal Health Services building on Monday 26th March, between 10:00am and 2:00pm.

During this time, VEC staff will assist people to enrol for the first time, re-enrol or update their details, and answer queries around voting and elections.

Electoral Commissioner, Steve Tully, says enrolling might seem like a daunting task, especially when providing personal details to a Government agency.

"We understand the concerns people have around enrolling, such as giving out personal details. But we want people to know this is not the case, they have alternative enrolment options if they do not want their address to be shown on the roll," Mr Tully said.

"Receiving fines seems to be another issue of concern. We’ve spoken to people, who think they will be fined for never enrolling, which is not true," says Mr Tully.

"We want to make enrolling an easy, empowering experience, so I encourage people to attend the enrolment day, where you can ask these questions and seek assistance with filling out an enrolment form."

The Central Gippsland Aboriginal Health Service is located at 7-9 Buckley St, Morwell. For more information on the enrolment day call (03) 9299 0738.
