Community Feedback Sought On Draft Northern Towns Outdoor Recreation Plan

The draft Latrobe City Northern Towns Outdoor Recreation Plan that has been developed through significant consultation is now available for public comment.

By Latrobe City Council - 14th April 2010 - Back to News

Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Kellie O’Callaghan, said that the townships north of the Princes Highway boast a large number of sports that are played at various local venues.

"The sports council has focussed on include football, netball, cricket, soccer, baseball, tennis, hockey, bowls and equestrian activities. The ongoing success of all of these sports in the area has been considered in the recreation plan.

"In previous years council has completed outdoor recreation plans in Traralgon, Moe Newborough and Morwell that have resulted in funding commitments of over $600,000 towards priority projects identified in each of these towns.

"Works undertaken with these funds have included pavilion extensions and redevelopments, lighting upgrades, netball court improvements and other improvements being made to a number of reserves within each of the towns.

"We would encourage people using the northern town recreation facilities, to have a look at the draft plan and have their say. We are relying on the users’ input to help create a plan that best serves the local communities that access these facilities," Cr O’Callaghan said.

Latrobe City Council coordinator recreation and open space planning, Ian Murphy, said that six key reserves and facilities in northern towns have been analysed as part of this plan including Glengarry Recreation Reserve, Toongabbie Recreation Reserve, Toongabbie Village Green, Tyers Recreation Reserve, George Bates Reserve, and Yallourn North Town Oval.

"In consultation with the users, master plans have been developed that identify numerous opportunities for improvements to these reserves. We now need to hear from the community to see if we have appropriately captured the thoughts and ideas of the users and to help determine the priority for each of the projects listed in the plan," Mr Murphy explained.

Copies of the draft plan are available from council’s service centres or from council’s website www.latrobe.vic.gov.au.

Comments on the draft plan will be received until 5pm Friday 7 May 2010 and should be forwarded to the undersigned, Latrobe City Council, PO Box 264, Morwell 3840. All submissions will be considered public documents unless specified otherwise by the submitter.
