New Centre Reengaging Young People In The Latrobe Valley

Member for Morwell Russell Northe today officially opened a new alternative learning centre for disengaged students from the Latrobe Valley.

By Russell Northe - 12th September 2014 - Back to News

The Latrobe Valley Flexible Learning Option (FLO), in Princes Drive, Morwell, begun delivering customised learning at the start of Term 3 and now has 38 students. The FLO was established through a partnership between the three main government secondary colleges: Lowanna College, Kurnai College and Traralgon College. Mr Northe, who represented Minister for Education Martin Dixon at the official opening, said a taskforce - established following the closure of Koorie-only Woolum Bellum Pathways School - undertook an in-depth investigation last year into best practice models. "The Latrobe Valley FLO is focused on reconnecting young people with education, engaging them in learning, and providing the individual support they need to overcome obstacles to successfully participate and complete an education or training pathway," Mr Dixon said. "The FLO’s strong links with existing government and community programs will lead to better life opportunities for disengaged young people from the Latrobe Valley." Latrobe Valley FLO Campus Principal Brett Pedlow said the FLO was already making a difference to students’ lives. "Attendance among the students is well up, which is a critical first step," Mr Pedlow said. "All students have individual learning programs to ensure they have the best possible chance of reconnecting with the education system and staying on track." The Napthine Government is building a better education system, with a record $9.2 billion for school education in 2014-15, $1 billion more than Labor’s last budget in 2010.
