Monash Uni Crippling Engineering

Gippsland Engineering has been derailed by a corrupt process led by Monash

By Andrew Schmidt - 29th October 2002 - Back to News

After stripping Gippsland of its financial and human resources, Monash Engineering has orchestrated a final death blow by announcing it will close Engineering within a year.

"Monash University Engineering wants to destroy engineering at the Gippsland campus," said Andrew Schmidt president of Monash University Gippsland Student Union.

"This attack on engineering at Gippsland was been done in a secretive way highlighting the total lack of transparency in the way reviews are done at the University."

"Engineering is an underpinning program of study at Gippsland and Monash is just concerning itself with the bottom line and not the impact on the community. Latrobe Valley has an economy significantly based on light and heavy industry and it makes perfect sense that engineering programs are offered at the Gippsland campus," Mr. Schmidt said.

Monash University Council gave its full support to the Gippsland campus in 1999 and despite this the Faculty of Engineering has been gradually removing resources and funding from the Gippsland campus.

"In light of the secretive way the review was conducted with absolutely no consultation with students, staff or the community the Victorian government must intervene," Mr. Schmidt said.

He continued by saying, "Monash University Gippsland Student Union calls upon the Victorian government to undertake an independent review of the Faculty of Engineering."
