A busy week for Fisheries Officers in Lakes Entrance

Fisheries Victoria Officers have interviewed another two commercial scallop licence holders for allegedly breaching their licence conditions.

By Department of Primary Industries - 30th August 2005 - Back to News

The alleged offences related to the unloading of a catch of scallops before the nominated time and the landing of undersized scallops.

A local transport company was required to unload a truck so the catch of scallops could be thoroughly inspected by Fisheries Officers.

In addition, last Tuesday afternoon Fisheries Officers from Lakes Entrance conducted a routine inspection on a recreational angler fishing on the Tambo River near Swan Reach.

It will be alleged that Fisheries Officers conducted a search of the surrounding river bank and motor car that revealed the angler was allegedly in possession of a total of 28 Black Bream, of which 23 where undersized.

The bag limit for Bream in the Gippsland Lakes and its tributaries is 10 per day.

It will be alleged that the undersized Bream ranged from 19cm to 22cm in size. This is significantly under the minimum size requirement of 28cm for Gippsland Lakes.

Eric Wiseman, Fisheries Officer said the Black Bream population in the Gippsland Lakes is still suffering from poor recruitment due to the current environmental conditions.

"Taking more than the possession limit and the removal of undersized fish can have a large impact on the future of the resource"

Fisheries Officers seized the Bream, which will be used for research purposes.

An Endeavour Hills man will be charged on summons to appear at a Magistrates Court at a later date.

"Fisheries Victoria is committed to having a high presence on the Gippsland Lakes to ensure adherence to the regulations," Mr Wiseman said.

Members of the public who observe any apparent illegal or suspicious fishing activity are reminded to call the 24 hour 13FISH (133 474) reporting line.
