Sculpture For Grantville Memorial ParkLocal artist, Victoria Nelson, has been commissioned to create a sculpture for the Grantville and District Memorial Park. By Bass Coast Shire Council - 25th May 2009 - Back to News After community consultation, the final conceptual design was approved by the Committee of Management.
Cr Veronica Dowman, Chair of the Park Committee, said the sculpture would be a memorial to the history of Grantville and its surrounding district.
"The sculpture will consist of three pedestals of cut granite rock, each 1.6m high by 600m wide," explained Cr Dowman.
"There will be three inter-related bronze filigree with images selected by both the community and committee members.
"The sculpture will include images of local flora and fauna and the Bunurong culture," continued Cr Dowman.
"Our early settlers, the farming community, Western Port and the local timber industry will be represented. The contribution of local residents to both World Wars and more recent wars will also be a feature."
Artist Victoria Nelson said the contemporary narrative sculpture would tell the history of the district.
"We will tell the story using recognised images, such as a digger’s hat, a horse ploughing a field or a familiar landscape", said Victoria.
The community were invited to participate in the initial clay stage of the sculpture. Members of the Committee and Local residents spanning three generations took part.
"Having people involved in the initial stage really ties the sculpture to the community and to the history of the people who created this monument to Grantville," explained Victoria.
"It is a way of defining the community to a place and time in history.
"It was very exciting to have children with their parents and grandparents spending the morning together working on the clay moulding."
