Work Underway On Coach Road Viewing Platform

Latrobe City Council, in consultation with TRU Energy Yallourn, has begun work on a new low level viewing platform on Coach Road, to replace the lookout tower that was decommissioned in 2006 for safety reasons.

By Latrobe City Council - 14th July 2009 - Back to News

The viewing platform overlooks Newborough and provides views across Lake Narracan towards Erica and Mount Baw Baw.

Latrobe City councillor, Cr Sharon Gibson, said that the original lookout tower was built by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria (SECV) many years ago, serving as a vantage point for scenic and far reaching views over the mining operations below.

"However, it was built in an era where public safety requirements were far less demanding than they are today.

"In 2006, an assessment of the tower and surrounding precinct was undertaken and a number of potential risks were identified. As such, it was determined there was no option other than to remove the tower and consider alternatives," Cr Gibson said.

"Council and TRU Energy developed plans for an alternative viewing platform which encourages visitors to enjoy the scenery and identify landmarks on the horizon. The new viewing platform, although not as high as the original tower, comes with the advantage of disabled access, allowing more people to enjoy the great views.

"The viewing platform has always been a popular spot for locals and visitors to the area, however, as it posed such a high risk to public safety, the tower was dismantled and removed with the proviso that a new, safer structure be erected.

"TRU Energy transferred the land to Council and made a generous financial contribution to ensure that work on the new viewing platform could begin. The foundations have been laid, and the brickwork for the platform is taking shape. We are very much looking forward to the opening of the new platform, which is scheduled for completion in August," Cr Gibson concluded.
