Council assumes management responsibility for facilities

Latrobe City Council resolved to assume management responsibility for the Traralgon Sports Stadium at its Ordinary Council Meeting on Monday night.

By Latrobe Shire Council - 9th June 2004 - Back to News

The reclamation of management responsibility means Basketball Stadiums Victoria (BSV) will no longer manage the Stadium from 1 July 2004.

Council first negotiated a lease with BSV in 1998, but both parties have acknowledged in recent times that the terms of the lease have not been met and have been unable to settle on a new agreement.

Acting Chief Executive Officer, Paul Buckley, said that as a consequence, Council would now assume management responsibility and Council was currently negotiating the management changeover with BSV to ensure there was a smooth and seamless transition for staff, user groups and patrons.

Mr Buckley said Council assured users they would be able to continue to enjoy the same access to the Stadium as they currently experience. "We have no intention of changing any of the existing arrangements with users, and we will in fact be working to enhance their enjoyment of the facility," Mr Buckley said.

"Fees charged by Council will now be consistent across all centres for players and associations, though levies imposed by individual associations to members may obviously vary."

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Darrell White, said Council is also able to provide an assurance that it will continue with redevelopment plans for the Stadium so that the preliminary matches for the Commonwealth Games can be held. "We have been guaranteed that funding for the upgrade of the facility is available regardless of whether BSV or Council is managing the complex," Cr White said.

Council has also announced it will assume management of the Churchill Leisure Centre.

"The existing management agreement with Monyx (Monash University) ends on 30 June 2004 and Council will take over responsibilities for the Churchill Leisure Centre from 1 July," Cr White said.

"The decision to assume management responsibilities for the two facilities is consistent with Council’s previous decision to take over management of the Morwell Leisure Centre.

"By doing so we are able to ensure there is equity of access, equality in pricing structures and synergy in attracting a wide range of sporting events to the region," Cr White said.

Mr Buckley said Council will also be endeavouring to retain the existing staff at both facilities.

"To encourage the retention of staff and ensure a smooth transition for staff at the facilities, we are currently talking to them about transferring their current employment arrangements and entitlements across," Mr Buckley concluded.
