Traralgon East To Receive Upgraded Community Centre

The Traralgon East community is set to receive a redeveloped community facility that will be located in the heart of their neighbourhood.

By Latrobe City - 18th November 2010 - Back to News

Latrobe City Council conducted thorough consultation with the local community and members of the Traralgon East Community Group that identified the Traralgon East Community Centre, located on Cameron Street, as the ideal destination for their community facility.

Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Kellie O’Callaghan, said that the new facility would provide Traralgon East with the community centre that it truly needs.

"It is important for a community centre to be located in the heart of a community, which is exactly where the new facility will be. The Traralgon East community hall, located on Shakespeare Street, has been available to the community since 2002 but has suffered from a range of issues, mainly its isolation from the community, which left it considerably underutilised," Cr O’Callaghan explained.

Latrobe City’s manager Community Development, Steve Tong, added that the new community centre would receive major upgrades to ensure it met the needs of the community.

"The redevelopment of the Cameron Street facility will include an extension to the building; upgraded kitchen and toilet facilities; a second external entrance; disability compliant access; a concertina divider for the large meeting room; additional storage; appropriate floor covering to enable community art; extra windows to increase natural light and surveillance; and water and solar capture measures," Mr Tong said.

Latrobe City councillor, Ed Vermeulen, explained that the cost for the preferred design option is higher than the available budget and sale of the Traralgon East Community Hall, which is underutilised, has been identified as a possible source of additional funds.

"The sale would allow Council to consolidate community facilities in Traralgon East to a central location, which is consistent with the Neighbourhood Renewal objective for providing central community hubs. The sale will also release funds provided for the ongoing operating and maintenance costs of the Traralgon East Community Hall.

"Funds generated from the sale of the Traralgon East Community Hall will enable the Traralgon East Community Centre to be redeveloped in accordance with concept designs which are fully supported by local community members and stakeholders and will achieve an outcome that meets the needs of the community.

"To determine whether the Traralgon East Community Hall is surplus to community requirements, Council is inviting public comment concerning the proposal," Cr Vermeulen concluded.

All written submissions concerning the sale of the Traralgon East Community Hall should be addressed to the CEO, Latrobe City Council, PO Box 264, Morwell, 3840 and will be received up until close of business Friday 10 December 2010

Written submissions will be considered at the Council Meeting to be held Monday 20 December 2010 in the Nambur Wariga Room, Corporate Headquarters, 141 Commercial Road, Morwell, commencing at 7pm.
