Newhaven not right for regional skate park

Grayden’s Reserve as selected site, with community consultation on the project.

Bass Coast Shire Council will determine a new location for its Regional Skate Park and Playspace, as both the San Remo Foreshore and Grayden’s Reserve in Newhaven have been deemed unsuitable to deliver this large scale project.

Grayden’s Reserve has been selected as the preferred site for the Project as it has a temporary skate park and an ageing playground - which is due for an upgrade with it’s suitable size

The $1.5 million project included a $650,000 grant provided by Sport and Recreation Victoria (SRV). The funding from SRV for this project has now been withdrawn, following a request from Council for a variation to the Project.

Grayden’s Reserve as selected site

Both Council and SRV agree that the most suitable site, backed by community support, is required in order to deliver this exciting project. Grayden’s Reserve was selected as the site for the skate park and playspace at the 2019 December Council Meeting.

Consulting the community for decision

Following this decision, community consultation took place and a project steering committee was established to progress designs. The design process was put on hold in March 2020, due to COVID-19 restrictions and Council’s decision to prioritise its community response to the pandemic.

Bass Coast Shire Mayor, Cr Brett Tessari said Council is proud of what it has achieved in recent years, including the delivery of skate facilities in Cowes, Corinella and Grantville.

Best facility for all level of skaters

Bass Coast Shire Mayor, Cr Brett Tessari said, "The Regional Skate and Playspace Project remains a key priority for Council, so it is really disappointing that following detailed planning, including thorough community consultation, that both the San Remo Foreshore and Grayden’s Reserve have been deemed unsuitable. We understand the skating community will also be disappointed, but we are committed to achieving the best facility for all levels of skaters across Bass Coast. "

Positive outlook for the project

Cr Tessari concluded, "While this funding is no longer available, the good news is SRV has been really positive throughout this process and once we determine a new location, we will be able to re-apply for funding. We will now spend some time investigating to find the best location for the skate park and playspace, which will involve community consultation in the future."

Community consultaion will be held in finding the best location for the skate park and play space
