"The report highlights what I have been advocating for a number of years -- that early intervention and support is essential to give students the greatest opportunity to reach their education potential," Mr Ingram said.

"On a number of occasions, l have called on the government to adequately fund early intervention, integration aides and generally increase assistance to students with learning and speech difficulties."

Mr Ingram said the State Government’s policies have allowed many students to fall between the gaps.

"Providing early assistance to these students will bring many of them into mainstream, allowing the best outcomes for our children," he said.

"The report (6.4) has recommended that the government improves outcomes in identifying and targeting students who are achieving well below expected levels.

"I will call on the government in Parliament this week to implement recommendations contained in the report as a matter of necessity," Mr Ingram said.
