Male ‘Makeovers’ at Gallery

In a new exhibition entitled ‘Modified’ showing at Latrobe Regional Gallery from 20 March, Western Australian artist Paul Caporn is fascinated with the objects of suburban backyard culture.

Latrobe City arts director, Julie Adams, said, that the work in this exhibition takes a satirical look at expectations of masculinity and cultural identity. Barbeques, lawn mowers and tool boxes become humanised and intertwined with the desires and fantasies of their owners.

"Familiar objects have been modified to give them a new meaning. An example is ‘Barbie Mate’, where Caporn hybridizes man and machine. The end product is a ‘Weber’ barbecue kettle, with its lid half raised and a fleshy gut bursting forth, thereby mimicking the stereotypical Aussie beer gut that may be seen around such an object.

"All of the main pieces are large, three dimensional installation pieces, skilfully made, with the polished, plastic finish one would expect from manufactured consumer goods," Ms Adams said.

"The main pieces will be accompanied by a series of anodized aluminium prints and photographs that reflect engineering drawings and media product shots.

"This exhibition is a lot of fun, but also gets us thinking about male identity and popular culture in contemporary Australia," Ms Adams added.

‘Modified’, an ART ON THE MOVE touring exhibition, opens on 20 March and closes on 16 May.
