Community Group Marketing Manual Authors Graduate

Participants in Latrobe City Council’s latest Community Jobs Program (CJP) project have been presented with graduation certificates following sixteen weeks of work on Latrobe City’s new ‘Community Group Marketing Manual’.

Participants in Latrobe City Council’s latest Community Jobs Program (CJP) project have been presented with graduation certificates following sixteen weeks of work on Latrobe City’s new ‘Community Group Marketing Manual’.

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Brendan Jenkins together with SCOPE Chief Executive Officer, Gareth Evans, were presented with a draft copy of the manual and praised the work completed by the thirteen participants through the project. Councillor Jenkins said the manual would assist Latrobe’s community groups to market and promote their assets and activities to the wider community.

"As part of the project the twelve CJP participants were placed into workgroups, with each group concentrating upon specific elements of the manual such as strategic planning, fundraising, marketing and information technology," Cr Jenkins explained.

"Some of the tasks undertaken by the CJP participants in researching and developing this manual have included approaching community groups in the community and conducting interviews with their representatives in order to find out what their needs are. The participants have also been instrumental in collecting and collating data for Latrobe City Council’s submission to the Department of Family and Community Services, which involved identifying needs and gaps in service delivery to the Latrobe community.

"This promotions and marketing manual will compliment Council’s current publication ‘A Guide for Committees’, providing two extremely useful tools which community groups can use to their advantage," Cr Jenkins said.

"Just as we have received requests for copies of ‘A Guide for Committees’ from throughout the state, interstate and even overseas as its reputation spread, I believe word will spread about what Latrobe City has created with this promotions and marketing manual and it will not be long before other municipalities and community organisations take advantage of the work we have done here.

"Importantly the Program has helped to prepare participants for employment or further study by exposing them to teamwork in an office environment and by providing them with skills development though Council’s partnership with SCOPE. The good news is that over half of the people involved in the project have already gained other work or are undertaking further study," Cr Jenkins added.

The type of training experienced by the participants included computer program applications, developing community surveys, basic research methods, teamwork, writing skills and verbal communication skills.

A further project to build on the current exercise has been approved by the Department of Education Employment and Training and is to begin early in 2002. The Community Jobs Program is a Victorian Government initiative with Council providing additional resources and investment.
