Gippsland Rugby League

Gippsland Wildcats most versatile player Jared Hiriaki set for another stint on the injured list as Wildcat’s hot and cold season continued today following a 32-26 loss to the top seeded Altona Roosters at Langshaw Park on Sunday.

In this after suffering an injury to his hand at the State Carnival in Perth early this month, Hiriaki was instructed not to take the field in the second stanza after having received a suspected cracked rib.

"I was not pleased with the loss yet very happy with Wildcats performance reverting back to basic football. Without numbers, the best football is basic football which is what Wildcats delivered on the day that took Roosters by surprise," coach Hiriaki stated.

The Wildcats started the game in trepidation boasting a twelve-man squad displaying determination and persistence. In just the first two minutes, Wildcats second rower Craig Legg barnstormed Roosters defence to score under the posts, with Brad Wright kicking for conversion.

The Roosters bounced back with centre Lionel Knowles delivering a double converted by Daniel Wells. Within minutes after Knowles second try, prop forward Anthony Huxford replied scoring wide unconverted.

The home side leading by two points

In a worrying sign for the Wildcats the turning point of the match came with the binning of Roosters Riki Damien.
