Mayor’s Message

There is much debate in the media at the moment about wind energy and criticism has been levelled at Council for supporting minority groups in their endeavours to stop wind facilities when the majority of the community is in favour of them.

By South Gippsland Shire Council - 12th November 2004 - Back to News

In support of the action that Council is taking, I would like to talk about the two issues which are of concern to Council.

The planning process is there to listen to both sides of the argument and, if a permit is issued, to put in place conditions that limit the impact on the neighbouring properties eg. set backs, screenings etc.

In the case of wind facilities, the guidelines do not allow this process to be impartial. The adjoining landowners are the stakeholders and are most affected by these planning decisions and they should be listened to in this debate.

Noise issues, property devaluation and loss of amenity do not affect the wider community but they do affect adjoining landowners and others in close proximity to the wind facilities.

Communities are very divided on these issues and if there is a breakdown in communication in these small communities that are most affected, then we should all be concerned.

Council’s position is that it will support those communities that welcome wind energy facilities. This also implies that where they are not welcome we will not support their installation.
