Jobseekers graduate through employment program15 jobseekers have found employment following a new training program being offered by Latrobe City Council, with funding from the Federal Government. By Latrobe City Council - 31st August 2005 - Back to News Nationals Member for Gippsland Peter McGauran yesterday presented graduation certificates to 20 job seekers who had completed the New Apprenticeships Access Program at a ceremony at Latrobe City Council’s headquarters yesterday.
"15 of the 20 graduates have already found employment in a range of careers including administration, aged care, child care, information technology and building and construction," Mr McGauran said.
"The New Apprenticeships Access Program provides opportunities for disadvantaged job seekers.
"The program provides accredited training and job search assistance and then on-going support once employment is found.
"To have already found jobs for 15 of the 20 graduates is a credit to the graduates themselves, and to Latrobe City Council and the two training providers, GippsTAFE and i-GAIN."
Latrobe City’s Employment Development Coordinator, Joanne Brunt, said the graduation highlighted the success of program.
"The New Apprenticeships Access Program provides participants with the unique skills required for particular industries, whilst also providing them with the communication, organisational, and time management skills, together with the teamwork experience and occupational health and safety knowledge essential for all employment," Ms Brunt said.
Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Bruce Lougheed, said the New Apprenticeships Access program was a powerful tool to increase the skills and opportunities available for young people.
"The program has been an overwhelming success to date, providing participants with a pathway towards a career of their choice.
"Latrobe City has been very creative in its approach to upskilling young people in the area, and remains committed to increasing employment opportunities for young people; in particular, those who are at risk of long term unemployment, and those who are disadvantaged jobseekers.
"These programs have been successful and I’m impressed to see so many young people whose lives are being changed by the experiences they’ve encountered over the past months. However, these results can only be achieved through the hard work of many of the facilitating organisations such as Job Network providers and registered training organisations," Cr Lougheed added.
Stacey Bond, a participant who was successful in a traineeship at Latrobe City Council, said that undertaking training through the New Apprenticeships Access program improved her chances of gaining employment.
"The program really gave me the skills and confidence I needed to get started," Ms Bond said.
Latrobe City Council is offering further assistance to another 48 indigenous job seekers with current and upcoming courses being held in the Morwell and Bairnsdale regions. The programs are being facilitated by Skillsplus in partnership with the Federal Government.
