Council Seeking Urgent Undertaking On Toxic DumpingLatrobe City Mayor, Councillor Graeme Middlemiss, said Council was seeking urgent clarification from the Victorian State Government over reports that the Latrobe Valley has been again shortlisted as the site for Victoria’s toxic waste dump. By Latrobe City - 12th November 2003 - Back to News Cr Middlemiss said an article appearing in the Sunday Herald Sun on 9 November alleged that a Latrobe Valley site was among three recommendations made in a final report from Government’s Hazardous Waste Siting Advisory Committee.
Cr Middlemiss said that Council was totally opposed to any move that would see the establishment of a toxic waste dump in the Latrobe Valley.
"This proposal was raised a few years ago and, at that time, our community made it perfectly clear to the State Government that it was not prepared to harbour a toxic waste dump in the Latrobe environment," Cr Middlemiss said.
"We in the Latrobe Valley have already shouldered the burden of significant industrial contaminants and as a consequence have suffered the highest incidence of asbestos related death and illness in the State. To suggest the Latrobe Valley should be the dumping ground for more of industry’s ills is an anathema to our community.
"I am appalled that a government study of toxic waste dump sites would have considered the Latrobe Valley, yet not have had the courtesy to consult Council or our community," Cr Middlemiss said.
"As a result of this latest allegation in the media, there is now widespread concern in the community that the Latrobe Valley is again high on the State Government’s agenda as a potential dumping ground for toxic waste. As a consequence, I call on the Government to clearly rule this out," Cr Middlemiss concluded.
