The Victorian Newsagents Association (VANA) in association with the Department of Innovation Industry and Regional Development has developed an industry specific program to be delivered through a series of workshops over the next five months.

According to senior economic development officer for Latrobe City, Leo Billington, the workshops will cover topics such as strategic business planning, marketing strategies, time management, debt and equity funding and maintaining appropriate financial statements.

"Newsagents from Traralgon, Churchill, Heyfield, Yarram, Wonthaggi, Leongatha and Meeniyan attended the first workshop recently hosted by Latrobe City where the principles and benefits of strategic business planning were discussed and analysed. Participants were required to prepare action plans encompassing the basics of effective planning which could be implemented immediately in their businesses," Mr Billington said.

"Latrobe City was selected as one of the locations throughout Victoria in which these workshops will be hosted and conducted. A professional development program such as this fits perfectly with our work in the economic development unit whereby local businesses benefit directly from business workshops while taking an opportunity to network. Furthermore, these are industry specific workshops and therefore are timely and highly relevant," Mr Billington explained.

VANA has initiated the professional development program to be conducted state-wide with over 130 newsagents expected to participate with the end result being increases to the profitability and value of their businesses. Association members have supported the program enthusiastically realising the immediate benefits which will result.

The next workshop scheduled in Latrobe City will be about strategies for business marketing and will be held on Tuesday, 25 July in Morwell.
