With the Bushfire Royal Commission coming to Latrobe City next week, the community is being encouraged to register to attend important consultation sessions.

By Latrobe City - 30th March 2009 - Back to News

Latrobe City Council mayor, Cr Lisa Price, believes that residents should participate in the meetings to have their say on how the state’s bushfire response can be enhanced.

"The Bushfire Royal Commission will be in Latrobe to hear our views and our concerns.

"Since the bushfires, residents have spoken to me at length about their experiences and the opportunities that they believe exist to not only make the community safer but the response of the authorities during these events more effective," Cr Price said.

"The Bushfire Royal Commission consultation sessions are our chance to make a difference to not only the Latrobe community, but all communities which could be at threat from bushfire.

"This tragic event has touched so many lives, caused such deep distress and scorched the heart of our community – our role, in fact our responsibility to those precious lives who are no longer with us, is to do everything within our power to make sure that an event of this magnitude never occurs again.

"Residents who believe that they have something to contribute or issues to raise should attend.

"The Commission is interested in all our stories whether they be the experiences of volunteers who fought on the front line, bushfire affected residents or interested community members.

"This is the forum to discuss concerns regarding the communications systems, the need for an enhanced warning system and comments regarding the post bushfire recovery activities – it all needs to be discussed and considered at this forum."

Cr Price said that residents could participate in two consultation sessions in Latrobe City.

"The Traralgon community consultation sessions will be held on Wednesday 1 April at the Traralgon Tennis Club. The first session will be held from 11.30am – 1pm and the second from 2.30 – 4pm.

"The Boolarra community consultation session will be held on the Thursday 2 April at the Boolarra Memorial Hall 9.30am – 11am.

"We have been advised that seating for these sessions is limited and interested residents will need to register by telephoning 1800 842 463," Cr Price added.
