Wellington welcomes calls for Wurruk Causeway upgrade

Wellington Shire Council is strongly backing calls by Gippsland South MP Peter Ryan to have the Wurruk Causeway replaced or duplicated to improve road safety and boost opportunities for economic development.

This push for a much-needed widening of the causeway would greatly reduce the hazards of overtaking on this stretch of road and enable the creation of a suitably attractive, inviting entry point to Sale, reflecting its prominence as a regional centre.

Importantly, it is hoped such enhancements would encourage more passing visitors to stay longer in the shire to view some of the many attractions that it has to offer.

The council has launched a concerted lobbying campaign to the Victorian Government and Vic Roads to secure commitment for the redevelopment. It is also making representations to the Federal Treasurer and Federal Minister for Transport and Regional Services, calling for Princes Highway improvements, including a duplication of this major arterial road between Sale and Traralgon.

The importance of the highway is recognised by the recent Gippsland Integrated Transport Study and the South East Australian Transport Strategy Inc which looks at pursuing the recognition of the Princes Highway as a road of national importance.

Any improvement to the road at the Wurruk entry point would complement other works planned for this location as part of the council’s Urban Design Framework, which are designed to enhance street scapes across the municipality through the installation of public art.

Said Wellington Chief Executive Officer Lyndon Webb: "It’s crucial that we gather as much momentum as possible for our lobbying efforts to secure the very important upgrade of the Wurruk Causeway for our community. The support and interest from other local members will be invaluable to strengthen our own advocacy efforts directed at the Federal Government for improvements to this important stretch of road.

"The Princes Highway is the backbone of our shire and is a major route for tourists, commuters and road freight traffic. Redevelopment would add a new dimension to the shire’s competitive edge in terms of economic advancement and road safety by increasing our accessibility and competitiveness in relation to other regional centres."
