Council To Make Submission To The Emissions Reduction Fund Green PaperFollowing Monday’s meeting Latrobe City Council resolved to make a submission to the federal government’s Emissions Reduction Fund Green Paper, By Latrobe City - 20th February 2014 - Back to News a key component of the Australian Government’s climate change policy the Direct Action Plan.
Latrobe City Council’s mayor, Councillor Sharon Gibson, said that the submission
requests the Australian Government provides assistance to the region.
"We need to ensure investor confidence is maintained and that new and existing investment decisions are not adversely impacted under the government’s climate change policy. We also request a community education and awareness pilot program in the region to support the successful implementation of the Direct Action Plan and Emission Reduction Fund.
"To date, we have been clear in our support for balanced use of brown coal and support of low emission coal technology research and development efforts as well as for carbon farming initiatives. We now need to see some tangible evidence that our voice is being heard.
"Developing and maintaining strong relationships with government at federal and state level is vital as we collaboratively discuss the region’s transition to a low carbon emissions future. This submission provides the Australian Government with a background of our proactive work in this area and ensures the needs of the local community are being heard. Latrobe City is keen to enter into discussions with the Australian Government and our local members of parliament on this vitally important policy issue for our community and region," Cr Gibson said.
