Churchill Youth Action Centre to hold basketball clinic as part of new year’s program

Latrobe City Youth Services held a barbecue at Kurnai College, Churchill Campus last week to promote the upcoming activities planned for the Churchill Youth Action Centre, including a basketball clinic with Pacers star Vashon Weaver.

Youth Development Officer, Leanne Vella said that the program for the new year was being developed and encouraged all young people to go along for a session.

"By giving students at Kurnai the opportunity to meet the Youth Services team and hear first hand about the great activities that are programmed for the Youth Action Centre, we hope to attract a regular group of young people over the year.

"The barbecue was a hit, although feeding over 250 hungry kids was challenging stuff in the summer heat," Ms Vella said.

"The program for the coming weeks is shaping up and the first big event for the Churchill Youth Action Centre is a basketball clinic with Latrobe City Pacers player Vashon Weaver. This will be held on Wednesday 4 March between 5pm and 6pm. There will be free giveaways, and food for all participants and of course, Vashon will be on hand to run the clinic and offer his expert advice on all things basketball," Ms Vella explained.

"Other activities planned to date include learning to surf the net and designing web pages. Creativity is also on the menu with Churchill YAC in need of a makeover. Whether young people want to join in or just hang out with their friends, we would encourage everyone to come along to the Centre and give it a try," Ms Vella concluded.

Churchill YAC is open Wednesday nights from 4-7pm at Gaskin Park, Manning Drive. All young people aged 12-18 are welcome to attend. For more information contact Youth Services on 5132 2800.
