Eight hour day exhibition at GalleryAn exhibition of photographs celebrating the 150th anniversary of the eight hour day is currently being exhibited in the International Power Hazelwood Community Access Gallery. By Latrobe City Council - 6th July 2006 - Back to News Latrobe Regional Gallery’s acting curator, Sherryn Vardy said that ‘Dignity, Respect, Self’ was a selection of work from the last 25 years by Melbourne-based artist John Werrett.
"Werrett’s images focus on the workplace environment and the relationship of the individual within that environment. Many surroundings are explored such as the docks in Melbourne, the pearling industry in Broome and the services of Austin Health," Ms Vardy explained.
"Also included are a potato farmer from Moe South, Joe Rosato and a retailer from Morwell, Guido Monacella taken in 1988," Ms Vardy said.
Werrett is a highly skilled photographer and does not simply re-represent what he sees through the lens.
Werret himself said "I am to communicate ideas through the documentary essence inherent in the photograph. The work gives my photographic subjects their space, their dignity, and makes for a certain sincerity to come through. I photograph the individual, not the stereotype. These people have names."
Ms Vardy added that Werrett had a long history of working in the photographic arts around Australia. He has exhibited widely in Victoria and has permanent exhibitions at the Australian Workers Heritage Centre and at Austin and Repatriation Medical Centre and in an ongoing display at the State Library of Victoria. He is also represented in many significant collections such as the National Library of Australia and Monash Gallery of Art.
‘Dignity, Respect, Self’ continues until Thursday 18 July.
Latrobe Regional Gallery is located at 138 Commercial Road, Morwell, and is open Monday to Friday 10am-5pm, and on weekends 11am–4pm. The gallery is closed public holidays. For further information about exhibitions at the gallery, please telephone 5128 5700. Entry is free.
