GippsTAFE Saves More Than One Million Litres Of Water

Gippsland Water has congratulated GippsTAFE for saving almost two million litres of water at the institute’s Morwell and Yallourn campuses, following participation in the savewater!® efficiency service (SWES).

Under the program, Gippsland Water conducted a preliminary site assessment at both campuses in 2005 and 2006. The aim of the audit was to assess and measure all water-using facilities on site, quantify water use, identify water efficiency options and prioritise water-saving recommendations.

The assessment demonstrated great potential, with an expected annual cost saving of around $6,000 for the two campuses. This resulted in the implementation of a number of water efficiency measures, including the installation of flow control valves and repairing minor leaks at the site.

Since implementation, GippsTAFE has saved a massive 1.8 megalitres, or 14.7 per cent of water - equivalent to an Olympic-sized swimming pool.

Gippsland Water managing director John Mitchell said, "GippsTAFE’s water savings demonstrate that the savewater!® efficiency service is a great incentive for local companies and businesses to take part in a valuable program, which will not only help them save water, but save costs as well.

"The staff at both campuses have been very supportive of the program and in assisting Gippsland Water carry out the audit process," he said.

"GippsTAFE’s effort to save water is not only an achievement for themselves, but also a contribution to the wider community in demonstrating leadership in water conservation by taking part in the program."

Established in 1928, GippsTAFE is one of the state’s largest regional TAFE institutes with modern facilities. As an educational provider, the institute provides more than 300 courses to around 12,000 students each year.

"GippsTAFE is pleased to see the benefits of the SWES program and we hope to implement similar water saving measures at our other campuses across Gippsland as well," GippsTAFE Facilities Manager Helen Arbuthnot said.

"It is a great initiative, and we encourage other businesses to get involved the same way we have," she concluded.
