Swim Club Favours Upgrade

Members of the South Gippsland Bass Swim Club have met with Bass Coast Shire Council officers to discuss the Bass Coast Aquatic and Leisure Centre Feasibility Study.

By Bass Coast - 6th May 2011 - Back to News

Treasurer of the Club, Moira Bates, said having enough time for squad sessions was one of the biggest issues the club faced.

"With the increase in lessons and other classes, it pushes the swim squad times later," said Ms Bates.

"While this is ok for our older members, it makes things quite late for young swimmers.

"We train five times a week at the Wonthaggi pool and do an extra session at Leongatha.

"We introduced the Leongatha session because we couldn’t get another session at Wonthaggi and we need our swimmers to get experience using starting blocks, which we don’t have at Wonthaggi.

"The perfect solution for us would be a 50 metre pool. Swimmers need to have their times recorded in a 50 metre pool to qualify for country and state championships. This means a lot of travel for our members."

While a 50 metre pool is not a recommendation in the feasibility study because of economic viability, the club acknowledges other improvements could help them out.

"Spectator seating is important," said Ms Bates. "As a club we host one swim carnival a year but it’s hosted out of the Leongatha pool because we simply don’t have the facilities in Wonthaggi.

"The change rooms obviously need upgrading and we’d like a secure area to store equipment like fin bags and buoys so our members don’t need to bring equipment all the time."
