Satisfaction survey positive for council

84% of Latrobe City residents interviewed as part of the 2006 local government community satisfaction survey, believe the performance of council has improved or stayed the same in the past twelve months.

The ninth annual report card, which was undertaken in 77 of the 79 local government areas across Victoria, additionally found there was a marked increase in the satisfaction levels of the respondents’ perception of Latrobe City Council’s activities in both recreational facilities and economic development in Latrobe.

Latrobe City also improved on the 2005 satisfaction levels in advocacy, community engagement, health and human services.

In respect of other areas of activity, council’s overall rating was similar to the 2005 results other than in waste management, where a lack of a hard waste collection and the cost of waste disposal were identified as key issues behind a percentage decrease.

Latrobe City’s chief executive officer, Paul Buckley, said that overall, the report on the survey is a pleasing result. "In comparison to other councils in Victoria, Latrobe City is close to the median result except for a higher score in traffic management and parking, and town planning and approvals," Mr Buckley said.

350 surveys were undertaken in Latrobe at random in February and March, by Wallis Consulting Group for the Department for Victorian Communities.

Mr Buckley said feedback from those who were interviewed helped identify areas where council could improve its performance.

"From this survey, respondents told us we needed to place more emphasis on footpath works, street cleaning, enforcement of animal bylaws and the provision of parking. Pleasingly, on a number of those issues we have already initiated programs that are aimed at further improvement," Mr Buckley said.
