Bemm River Sewerage Scheme Boost

East Gippsland Water is pressing ahead with an eagerly awaited reticulated sewerage scheme at Bemm River, thanks to $870,000 in Victorian Government funding.

East Gippsland Water, which is also helping to fund the scheme, applied to the Victorian Government for financial assistance. Its application was supported by local property owners and East Gippsland Shire Council.

The sewering of Bemm River is a very high priority in East Gippsland Shire Council’s Domestic Wastewater Management Plan.

A reticulated sewerage scheme is a sustainable long term solution to improve wastewater management in the township, particularly given increasing demand for holiday accommodation. The scheme will enable additional low lying areas that are currently unsuitable for development, to be subdivided and developed.

The overall project cost is expected to be about $2.2 million. Detailed costings are still being confirmed, as is the level of contribution from some 100 local property owners who stand to benefit.

Said East Gippsland Water’s Managing Director, Les Mathieson: "After 15 years of discussion with the local community, we are very pleased with the Victorian Government’s funding commitment.

"Both the Bemm River community and the environment will benefit from the construction of a reticulated sewerage scheme.

"We are now in the process of preparing a detailed design for the project and costings, which will take some six months to finalise. Included at this stage will be meetings with the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) to determine the best way to collect, treat and re-use the treated effluent from the township.

"Once the costings and details are finalised we will contact property owners and establish a local community consultative group to work through the preferred options for the implementation of the sewerage scheme."

It is expected that construction of the sewerage scheme will be completed in 2011.

Less than two years ago, a new $1.5 million water treatment plant was designed and constructed to provide high quality drinking water to Bemm River.
