Northe Supports Suicide Prevention Programs

Full support to mental health and suicide prevention programs.

On the back of World Suicide Prevention Day yesterday and RUOK Day tomorrow, Member for Morwell Russell Northe has thrown his support behind these and other mental health and suicide prevention programs.

"As many in my community know, I’m extremely passionate about services for those suffering from mental illness", Mr Northe said from Spring Street today.

"Yesterday in Question Time, the Minister for Mental Health acknowledged our State’s terrible suicide statistics that are ‘twice the road toll and the leading cause of death of Australians aged between 15 and 45’".

"Whilst I congratulate the Minister in raising these important issues, I again ask the Government to address desperately needed funding to increase or continue the delivery of vital suicide supports in my electorate", Mr Northe discussed.

"For example, I’ve previously posed questions around Lifeline Gippsland’s funding or lack thereof, and called upon the Government to commit to funding this amazing organisation an additional $120,000 per year" Mr Northe.

With an extra $120,000, Lifeline Gippsland could provide additional training to increase the number of Crisis Supporters who respond to 13 11 14 calls, fund the Connect Call Back Service which provides ongoing phone support from trained Crisis Support Workers to people living in Gippsland facing a crisis, as well as implement face to face peer support groups for our most vulnerable people.

"I’m again calling upon the Andrews Government to urgently provide additional support to Lifeline so they are in turn able to help those who are in crisis", Mr Northe continued.

"I’m also imploring everyone, that as we reflect upon World Suicide day and RU OK day to please take care. Remember, that if you are facing difficult times – and we all face hard times - that you’re not alone, please reach out when you need support, and as a community we need to put our arms around those who are struggling".

Mr Northe has recently joined forces with the Rotary Club of Traralgon and Gippsland Motor Group to host a golf day to support the delivery of additional Mental Health First Aid Training courses across the Gippsland community.

"Our Tee Up for Mental Health Golf Day Fundraiser is to be held on Friday 27th September and I encourage the community to get behind our cause" said Mr Northe.

"All funds raised will go directly to local organisations to deliver essential Mental Health programs in the local area, including Lifeline Gippsland, so you can be assured your support will make a difference" Mr Northe said.
