An inaugural exhibition in the public foyer of the Latrobe Performing Arts Centre in Traralgon, has launched a new education and public programs initiative being delivered through Latrobe City Council.

The exhibition features the works of Lavalla Catholic College students, and celebrates the first student works to be displayed in the ‘Foyer Exhibition Program’, 2009.

The realist drawings and paintings in the exhibition explore themes of portraiture and still life, using materials including oil on canvas, graphite on paper and coloured pencils on paper. Contributing artists are from Years 10, 11 and 12 from Lavalla Catholic College in Traralgon.

Latrobe City mayor, Cr Lisa Price, said the Foyer Exhibition Program is designed to engage local schools by offering exhibition hanging space at the Performing Arts Centre.

"The Lavalla exhibition showcases the school’s arts program and has been a special point of interest for patrons who have attended recent shows.

"The exhibition has been an additional opportunity to engage with the arts and to view works of future local artists," Cr Price said.

Latrobe performing arts and venues coordinator, Kathleen Roberts, said the foyer space at the Performing Arts Centre has recently been upgraded to enable the display of art work.

"This space has been dedicated to schools to give students the opportunity to exhibit their work in the broad community rather than just within their school environment," Ms Roberts explained.

"Latrobe City is delighted to be able to strengthen its relationships with schools through this initiative, and invites all schools to take up this unique opportunity."

Lavalla Catholic College teacher, Frank Mesaric, said that as an art teacher he saw the space available through the program as an ideal opportunity to showcase what could be the next generation of young artists.

"The quality of the work exhibited is a clear expression of the talent of the students as such, and the wonderful arts program offered at Lavalla," he said.

Exhibitions incorporated in the Foyer Exhibition Program will be on view during normal opening hours at the Box Office: Mondays to Fridays 10am - 5pm. The exhibitions are also bound to receive a lot of attention from people attending the programs in the Little Theatre and the Town Hall Theatre.

The Lavalla exhibition continues until Friday 29 May 2009; with the next exhibition featuring the work of students from Lowanna Secondary College in Newborough, commencing in early June.

Schools interested in taking advantage of the opportunity to exhibit student works are asked to contact the education and public programs officer at Latrobe City Council, Jenny Peterson, telephone 5128 5708; or 0458 366 753; or email jennype@latrobe.vic.gov.au.
