Ingram Welcomes Shire’S Move To Become "RV Friendly"

The Independent Member for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram, has welcomed the formal declaration that East Gippsland Shire Council is finally becoming a recreational vehicle (RV) friendly area.

Speaking in State Parliament last week, Mr Ingram explained why this was such an important decision for the region’s tourism.

"The RV sector is the largest-growing tourism market across regional Australia and regional Victoria," Mr Ingram told Parliament.

"Fully self-contained Winnebagos, caravans and RVs are increasingly visiting our area to take in the spectacular natural areas and experiences.

"Local by-laws and current signage are sending a message to this large and very important tourism sector that they are not welcome in East Gippsland."

Mr Ingram said not only are these messages extremely negative, but they are also unenforceable.

"Over the past two years, I have been working with the East Gippsland Shire Council, the Department of Sustainability and Environment, local business and tourism authorities and the chambers of commerce to develop a policy change to encourage, regulate and provide infrastructure and support so that our region gains a greater benefit from this sector of the tourism market," Mr Ingram said.

"We have got some great places where the RVs already come and stay.

"While this has generated some local opposition, it is important that we provide the framework and regulations to make sure those fully self-contained recreational vehicles are allowed to come and stay and enjoy our area and that we can regulate and manage those who are not fully self-contained, so that we limit the damage or impact of unmanaged camping in high use public areas," Mr Ingram concluded.
